NYIP is proud to participate with the AmeriCorps Education Awards Program. This enables each intern to receive, upon completion of their year's work, $4,725 toward future tuition or current student loans. In addition, during the year with NYIP, interns are eligible to defer payments on their current federal student loans.
Each intern receives a bi-weekly stipend to cover basic food and personal needs, sharing supplies as desired. Rent, utilities and medical insurance are all provided through the program. In addition, each intern receives MetroCards for the entire year, ensuring unlimited access to New York City's excellent public transportation system. St. Mary's is only 3 blocks from a busy subway station, and is centrally located among several universities and seminaries.
The intern apartment has 5 single rooms, each with a bed, wardrobe, desk and chair. There is a communal eating/living area, with a kitchenette (microwave oven and range top). The church enjoys high-speed wireless Internet access. Interns use their cell phones for phone service.
Finally, each intern receives a Relocation Allowance at the year's end to facilitate their transition. Past interns have gone on to a variety of pursuits: graduate school/seminary, other volunteer/internship programs, and/or full-time work. NYIP's professional, social and religious affiliations and contacts can help interns connect to New York City's many resources and opportunities.
